Dental Fillings

What are Dental Fillings?

A dental filling is a type of restoration that is designed to replace an area of decay within a tooth. When a cavity forms, the resulting decay will eventually begin to eat away at the tooth until it reaches the inside pulp. Before the decay can get this deep, it is removed with a low speed drill and a filling placed. Our tooth-colored composite fillings can last for years before replacement is needed.

Why might Dental Fillings be needed?

The main reason for needing a filling is because you have a cavity. Cavities can occur in both adult and pediatric teeth. Oral hygiene and poor dietary habits are the two most common factors contributing to tooth decay. However, some people are simply more prone to decay and will get regular cavities even with quality brushing and flossing.

Who is a candidate for Dental Fillings?

To determine if you have a cavity, we will perform a routine dental examination. Using an instrument known as an explorer, we will scrape the surface of each tooth. Cavities often feel “sticky” and the explorer may get caught in these areas. If you have a cavity, it is important to come in for a filling so that the decay does not get worse.

What happens during the Dental Filling process?

The dental filling procedure involves administering a local anesthetic to one area of the mouth. We then work to remove the decay completely and prep the small hole for the filling material. Composite resin is placed inside of the hole and excess is smoothed away. The remaining material is cured with a bright light before it hardens into place. You can have multiple fillings placed at the same time, if they are within the same area of the mouth. The filling procedure is very quick, and you’ll be left with a restoration that lasts you for many years.
